Earthquake in Nepal

On April the 25th 2015 a large earthquake took place in Nepal.

The epicentre was close to the capital Kathmandu. It was the worst earthquake in Nepal for 80 years.

Almost 9000 people were killed. More than 22.000 were injured. Lots of houses, roads and monuments were destroyed. The earthquake was measured at 7.8 on the Richter Scale.

On May 12th another earthquake took place. It measured  7.3 on the Richter Scale.

Between the first earthquake and over the next few months, Nepal experienced more than 1000 minor earthquakes, called aftershocks.

More than 800.000 homes were destroyed and about 300.000 homes damaged.

9.000 people died and 22,000 were injured.

Approximately 8 million people in Nepal were affected by the earthquakes.

When the team around was in Nepal in March 2017, almost two years after the first earthquake, we experienced a country which has come far, but must still deal with many things.

Many people are still living in shelters. People do not get much help from the government, but family members help each other.

We never heard people complain, but we saw many people who were affected by the earthquakes.
